"Impossible Knots produce a refreshing alternative sound matching the fire of Bloc Party with the emotion of Bright Eyes"

- Ian Greaves, Director, International Major Label Services at Soundcloud -

Answering the call

‘There is a voice inside of you that whispers all day long’ Shel Silverstein

'You will never follow you inner voice until you clear up the doubts in your mind’ Roy T Bennett

The cusp of middle age, a recurring daydream, the what ifs and the why nots. Like a drone - always present, always there. A frequency we attempt to tune out, crowded by the day to day.

Until one day you choose do something different - you choose to tune in. You choose to listen, to hear - day by day - until that call becomes so deafening it has to be answered.

A beginning

‘Start with what you have’ Douglas Kiogora

It is from this space in life that Impossible Knots was born. From real purpose and drive to fill a creative void. Through a shared love of real, direct, honest and challenging music.

We are Matt, Andy & Crump. Three mates from in and around Brighton. Drawn to progressive music delivered through the warmth of vintage analogue. Our aim is to create real music that helps unlock and make sense of the moments that weave through our lives. Light in dark, beauty in the mundane, there for life’s small moments and its big ones.

Setting a course

‘Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much’ Helen Keller

We realised very early that the real magic in creativity comes from collaboration, leaving the door open rather than closing it tight. That remains firmly at the heart of everything we do. This wide open approach has lead us to chance meeting some incredibly talented people, none more so than the moment we stumbled across Steve Christie (Vintage Keys Studios).

A random Google search to find a localish studio, with a decent piano. What we found was a man mountain, musical tour de force. Hidden away, deep in the Hampshire countryside, surrounded by a treasure trove of vintage gear (including the exact Hammond M102 the Beatles used on Let It Be), a 1912 Steinway, patiently sitting at his analogue desk, we found our man Steve. As integral to Impossible Knots as any of us, his fingerprints are all over these records.

The why

‘We never fully move on, we leave a piece of ourselves behind’ Eric Overby

Our aim now is to take these moments whilst we have them. Swallow the fear, realise that there is never a right or wrong time for anything, just the here and now. Create a small imprint, something that gets left behind, something that reminds us that the only thing that ever got in the way was us.
